An old Zulu beaded Mbenge or beer pot lid (ZAM)

The Zulu traditionally drink a fermented beer made from sorghum. It is thin, light brown, sour and much loved. The beer was traditionally made in large clay pots and served in smaller ones once it had fermented. During the brewing process and while serving, they were covered with these woven Mbenge or beer pot covers. The best of these were intricately beaded. This delightful 1960s example has a colorful geometric design on a white ground. There is a border of larger white and orange plastic beads, as old as the main glass beaded areas, and this simply reflects a current fashion. This is a genuine old and used piece and in excellent condition for its age. Diameter 22 cm / 8 inches.
