Rare Pedi (North Sotho) beaded cache sex, 1950s. (SAJ)

These items are rarities and I have only seen 2 – 3. The pubic apron consists of abstract patterns of large old white beads stitched to an old and faded piece of “Selimpore” trade cloth. Selimpore, named for its original source, Selimpor in India, is cheap striped cloth imported for the native trade. Striped Selimpore is the preferred fabric for skirts of the tribes of the Northern Transvaal (Pedi, Venda, Shangaan), and because these tribal people are very conservative, they will not accept substitutes to this day. Size 17 x 19 cm / 10 ˝ x 11 inches
