These are two archetypal Zulu fighting weapons still in use today.
The old and well used fighting axe has a typical curved Zulu blade with a spiked tang piecing the handle and bent over to keep it in place. Blade head handle
The heavy knobbed club is carved from tamboekie which has dark heartwood and light outer wood. Diameter of knob 10 cm/ 4 inches length of handle 71 cm /28 inches.
They are both circa 1960 (when the axe would have been highly illegal) and were still being openly carried in the Mandela era when there was widespread conflict between Zulu political factions.
