The handle of this axe club is the classic a’ofa club of Maliata , with its finned striking head and tapered handle. The axe itself is a circa 1900 trade hatchet blade and if it once had a touché mark it has long sicne become invisible. The axe head, circa 1900, is probably older than the club itself, since it is more durable. The club is a nice, heavy example with a slight twist in the branch it was carved from, a practical weapon rather than a dance ornament (they are used for both purposes). Length 89 cm / 35inches, axe blade 12 x 10 cm / 4 ¾ x 4 inches.
