A superb old 1960s Mendi hourglass kundu drum from the Southern PNG Highlands. It has a rich, glossy patina and a deep and resonant tone. It has a dark patina on the wood and both the reptile skin tympanum and the original rattan carrying strap are intact. The drumskin is help in place by a grass collar wraped in a scrap of green trade cloth in the Mendi style. The central section of the drum is covered with a layer of wild banana leaf which also has a glossy patina.These drums are held under the arm amd beaten in unison by dancers at a singsing. Height63.5 cm /25 inches diameter 16 cm /6 ¼ inches.
