Barava carved clam shell grave offering, Malaita (FUB)

This old barava grave ornament or protective offering is carved from fossilised clam shell.It has a torn paper label on the back stating that it was collected in the village of Pangusia on the island of New Georgia, and an old collection number H5807, possibly identifyig it a part of the Peter Hallinan Collection. This example measures 7.5 x 7.5 cm / 3 x 3 inches.

Barava are uusally described as grave offerings or grave decorations, and used to protect ancestral skulls and bones. although larger and more elaborate examples were somtimes used to record land title, or as a store of wealth, or carred in war camnoes as proective charms.
