Antique Batak apothocary's mortar, Sumatra (DTE)

This large hardwood mortar is at least a century old and the apothecary's pestle has worn a shallow bowl in the centre over decades of use. This shape is made only in one small village. Magnificent patina and beautiful grain. It was possibly an heirloom piece, passed on from father to son. So nice to see something old, genuine and beautiful amidst the flood of Indonesian fakes!
