A fine circa 1960 wayang topeng stage mask, Bali. (DSJ)

This old wayang topeng or mime mask depicts a nobleman who wears a painted crown. He has a long face, a large nose and a luxuriant human hair moustache. Size: 29 / 18 x 15 cm / 11 x 7 x 6 inches.

Note: There are four forms of traditional performance en Indonesia, two puppet forms and two human forms. The two puppet forms are wyang klitik or shadow puppets, and wayang golek or three dimensional puppets. The two forms using human actors are wayang topeng, or masked mime performances, and wayang orang, where human actors have their faces made up like the masks and talk. The wayang topeg or mime actors never speak except for one or two clown characters who wear half masks that leave their mouths uncovered.
