An old javanese theatre mask (wayang topeng), 1940s. (DAY)

This fine old topeng mask would be worn by one of the non-speaking (dancing or miming) actors for two reasons: 1. It covers the whole face (only the comics spoke dialogue and their masks only covered the top of the face) 2. The teeth grip which the actor held it in place over his own face survives.

I purchased this mask from an old atique dealer in Semarang, Java, and he wrote the character’s name (Sugriwo) on a paper label stuck to the back. This was obviously one of a full set of masks as it has the initials UDN and ANCN carved at the back. Obviously well used with a patina of skin contact on the inside, but good paintwork and pigment survive. Size 20 x 14 cm / 8 x 5 ˝ inches.
