Superb old tobacco knife circa 1920, Lombok, Indonesia. (DAI)

This old knife, used for slicing tobacco or shaving betel nut on a wooden board, has a magnificently carved buffalo horn handle depicting a man of status being carried on the shoulders of a slave. (Bali and Lombok may have been tropical paradises, but only if you were one of the rulers rather than the ruled). The carving is superbly detailed and even the back is wonderfully carved and finely detailed.(see jpegs). The knife has a brass ferule and an old soft iron blade showing signs of pitting and corrosion, as you would expect from a utilitarian piece of this age. Figure 12 cm / 4 inches. Blade 17 cm / 6 inches.
