This beautiful old piece has a soft and lovely patina on both sides. It has been ground from a heavy piece of clam shell and pierced at three points to enable it to be tied around the forehead and over the head for sing sings (highland dances and festivals). These shells are sometimes permanently attached to the front of an elaborate dance head dress or wig rather than being tied onto the forehead. This old gam shell would most likely have been an heirloom piece. They are status symbols and valuable currency in their own right. Diameter approximately 13 cm / 5 inches.
