The Zulu charismatic church movements of the 20th century are an anti-colonial and anti-apartheid manifestation which meld Christian doctrine and Zulu cultural values. Female members of the church wear beaded breastplates, capes and girdles in combination with western clothes. These two pectoral necklaces in geometric designs are typical examples of church dress , circa 1970. Please note – the large beads are plastic – it has been impossible to obtain large glass beads of this size in South Africa since around WW2, and the plastic substitutes are traditional. Sizes (panels only, neckbands excluded) 16 x 17 cm and 20 x 11cm / 6 ¼ x 6 ¾ inches and 8 x 4 ¼ inches.
