Early 20TH century Hindu brass ceremonial ritual staff, the god Shiva as a bull. (SUA)

The top of this impressive and heavy cast brass staff, which is 44 cm/ 17 inches long, features a slender, elegant head of the god Shiva in the form of Nandi, the bull, with upswept horns. The short, heavy rod beneath gradually tapers down to a blunt point. There are ornate banded patterns for 6 – 8 inches below the head, as well as four rings to which brass bells ware attached (7 survive, tied on with wire). At the bottom of the ornamented section, there is a large a large brass ring that may have been used to secure this object to the carrier’s person or an altar.
