An old Lao bamboo and basketry quiver (SEH)

Lao minority tribes such as the Sao Sung who inhabit the mountain slopes have traditionally hunted game with cross bows, sometimes using poisoned arrow tips. This elegant sheath carries the arrow shafts in a black bamboo tube and the tips in an attached rattan basket. It is worn bandolier fashion, and the woven rattan band is decorated with cowrie shells on the outside, with a very fine patina on the exposed rattan on the inside. An attached string indicates that it is possible that the bamboo tube was once capped, but if so, this cap is no longer present. Bamboo tube 56 cm/ 22 inches, attached basket for darts 33 cm/13 inches, length of shoulder strap 119 cm/47 inches.
