A fine Dayak ape mask danced in crop planting rituals (PYG)

A very fine and expressive crop protection mask that was danced in planting rituals during which the masker is driven off from the paddi to symbolically protect the crop against raids by real monj=keys and apes. (Deer and Pig masks were also danced during these ceremonies for the same purpose). Size: 19 x 15 cm / 7.5 x 6 inches.

This mask has a strong and expressive face and is embellished wioth palm fronds to simulate fur. I urchased it in Kalimantan becaus eit was soen of the very few I saw that seemed tio show evidenc e of age and use.

Michael Heppel states that these are possibly the only truly figurative masks made by the Dayak. The mask measures30 x 17 cm / 13 x 7 inches. Please note, this mask has an old village repair.
