Antique coconut grating stool, Sumba, early 20th century. (DAF)

This very old and well patinated wooden coconut grating stool is carved in the shape of an animal - a dog or a pig. It has had an old village repair effected by fitting a sleeve of buffalo horn around the neck of the animal, where the wear and tear was greatest, and it is likely that the metal blade was replaced at the same time. The user sat or crouched on the stool facing the grater. A bowl was placed on the ground below the grater, and the operator grated the split coconut into the bowl. (Later this grated pulp was squeezed to extract the coconut milk). Size 69 x 18 x 23 cm / 27 x 7 x 9 inches.
