Small Kerewa figural Gope board (titi ebiha) with a human figure.
This board belongs to a class of Kerewa gopes in which a human figure was the central motif with very little abstract carving around it. (In this case, just an arc above the head). Douglas Newton points out that Kaerewe boards sometimes had their ends cut square rather than tapering to an oval (Art Styles of the Papuan Gulf, page 60). This gope is carved on a curved board indicating the timber was salvaged from an old canoe. Size 60 x 18 cm/ 24 x 7 inches.
