Old Oro lime spatula, exceptionally fine engraved patterns. (NJK)

The handle of this fine, large example is completely different on both sides and incorporates many different examples of the finely engraved icons which are so typical of Oro Province art. One side is rigidly geometric with a variation of a rectangular Greek key design, while the other has floral and abstract patterns, a real carver’s show off piece. It has been pierced at the top with multiple holes for the attachment of shell bead strings or other ornaments and has the typical Oro visual separation of the blade from the handle, a feature which is can also be found in Admiralty Islands spatulas although these are stylistically quite different. Length 49 cm / 19 ¼ inches.
