This exciting cone-shaped mask is a contemporary version of the traditional initiation mask of the Witu Islands (formerly the French Islands) off the coast of New Ireland and would have been worn and danced by a young male initiate in the latter half of the 20th century. It is an extremely traditional design featuring the white cone face with its pronounced eyes near the top, prominent beaked nose and large mouth. The major difference between this and older masks is that it is covered in fabric from an old shirt and painted rather than using painted palm spathe as a covering and incorporates some colourful modern trade paints. The result is a wonderfully dynamic sculpture and it is exciting to see the old traditions and art forms flourishing with new materials – a sure sign of cultural survival. The mask itself rests on two bamboo skids which would have supported the mask on the young wearer’s shoulders. Height 69 cm / 35 inches.
