This rare style of belt is exclusive to the Amaqwathi people who live in the Red Blanket Valley made famous by Joan Broster’s book of the same name. They are appliquéd onto trade cloth and this example features alternating bands of black bias binding (commonly used as a contrasting trim) and white beaded zig-zag patterns, with a pink, white, blue and black beaded fringe at the bottom. Size 66 x 5 cm/ 26 x 2 inches
